Restoration Lady culminates the epic New World Trilogy of author Sue Allan along with her collaborator, Roger Vorhauer.Like Allan's other novels, this is another page turner. The suspense of the story line never lets up. Spanning the years from before the fall of one Charles Stuart to the rise of another, the life of the heroine Bessie is catapulted from one crisis to another.
Through the accounts of her eventful life we see a whole gamut of seventeenth century society - from landed gentry and honored member of the court, to impoverished outcast; from religious Separatist to accused witch. Throughout our heroine finds herself on different sides of the raging issues of religious reform. At times she is persecuted by the radical Puritans of Cromwell's Commonwealth, and then we see her gaining sustenance from beliefs she learned from the early Pilgrim Fathers. She emerges both as a survivor of 'the dreadful scourge' and a figurehead of the Restoration. In the king's view she is the very spirit of his kingdom incarnate.
As with her earlier novels, the author works the magic of her storytelling with three dimensional characters and evocative descriptions. In this volume various loose ends of the plots of the other two are satisfyingly resolved. In total the whole trilogy weaves together essential aspects of the seventeenth century as experienced in the lives of a handful of people. It is quite an ambitious undertaking and reflects a tremendous amount of historical research. All this is presented in a masterful way that appeals to the contemporary reader. Kudos to Ms. Allan and Mr. Vorhauer.
The first of the New World series are Mayflower Maid and Jamestown Woman. Tudor Rose is a "prequel".
